Prototype Electronics invests again

Published - 12th Jan 2026

At Prototype Electronics, our dedication to precision, reliability, and continuous improvement drives every step we take. We’re proud to announce a new milestone: the acquisition of a MYPro I51 3D Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) system from Mycronic. This investment reinforces our mission to deliver the highest-quality electronic assemblies to our customers.

The MYPro I51 is Mycronic’s flagship 3D AOI solution, engineered to deliver unmatched speed, precision, and reliability for modern PCB assembly. Powered by Iris™ 3D vision technology, it captures ultra-sharp images and effortlessly inspects the smallest components, including 008004 (0201 metric) packages.

Why invest in upgrading our AOI?
Upgrading from 2D AOI to 3D AOI provides a significant improvement in inspection capability and reliability. While 2D AOI relies on colour and contrast to detect defects, it struggles with issues like shadowing, component height variations, and solder joint quality.

In contrast, 3D AOI measures true height and volume of components and solder, enabling accurate detection of lifted leads, insufficient or excessive solder, and coplanarity problems that 2D systems often miss.

This upgrade reduces false calls, improves first-pass yield, and ensures compliance with increasingly stringent quality standards for complex assemblies. As PCB designs become more miniaturised and densely populated, 3D AOI offers the precision and scalability needed to maintain high-quality production and reduce costly rework.

Our selection process
We started the process of selecting a 3D AOI system at the beginning of 2025 and quickly realized there was a wide range of impressive solutions available on the market. During our initial research, it became clear that this decision would not be straightforward. As our Engineering Manager, Daniel, noted: “We discovered early on that choosing the right system would be challenging given the high level of technology and capability offered by today’s equipment.”

On the selection process, Connor (Lead Manufacturing Engineer) said: “The initial phase of this project presented a steep but rewarding learning curve, allowing us to significantly advance our understanding of AOI systems. We established a robust evaluation framework to assess current market technologies and identified two primary architectures: multi-camera configurations and integrated laser-camera systems. Both represent substantial upgrades from the legacy 2D AOI hardware we had been using, enabling the adoption of 3D inspection capabilities for enhanced defect detection, depth analysis, and overall inspection accuracy.”

Daniel further explained: “We conducted supplier-led trials to assess complete AOI solutions, evaluating both hardware and software as an integrated package. These hands-on demonstrations were crucial for benchmarking capabilities against our inspection requirements, providing valuable insight into performance, integration potential, and overall impact on our processes.”

Our decision
After a thorough evaluation, we selected Mycronic for its laser-camera hybrid system, offering high-speed, high-accuracy 3D inspection with excellent repeatability.

Key Benefits That Drove Our Decision

  • AI-Powered Precision
The I51 uses intelligent algorithms to detect even the most subtle defects, from solder joint issues to component misplacements. This ensures every board meets our high standards before it leaves the factory.
  • Rapid Setup & High Throughput
With minimal programming time and fast inspection speeds, the I51 fits seamlessly into our agile workflow—allowing us to maintain speed without compromising quality. MYWizard and Auto-Matchmaker, dramatically reduce setup times.
  • Smart Adaptability
Whether it’s fine-pitch components, complex layouts, or evolving product designs, the I51`s intelligent defect detection adapts intelligently to each job, reducing false calls and improving inspection reliability.
  • Data-Driven Process Control
The system provides actionable insights and traceability, helping us continuously refine our processes and deliver consistent results.
  • Escape Tracker
  • This feature adds an extra layer of confidence, safeguarding production against costly errors.

Designed for high-mix environments, the MYPro I51 combines cutting-edge performance with intuitive automation—helping achieve superior throughput, flawless quality, and a competitive edge in today’s fast-paced electronics market.

Connor said, “The platform’s programmable library, false call rate tracking, and intuitive software allow us to fine-tune inspection programs with ease.”

“Building on their AOI system, integrating AI-driven inspection to proactively reduce false calls before PCBs reach review. This advancement is key to driving first pass yield rates toward their optimum. Mycronic’s platform stood out not only for its laser-camera precision and repeatability, but also for its software versatility, traceability enhancements, and support for remote and offline PCB review making it a strategic fit for elevating our manufacturing capabilities” Connor continued.

Daniel added, “This investment is more than just a technical upgrade—it’s a reflection of our zero-defect mindset. By integrating the MYPro I51 into our inspection process, we’re reducing escapes, minimising rework, and ensuring that our customers receive products they can trust.”

“We look forward to working with Mycronic and developing our relationship” Daniel continued.

Looking Ahead
As we continue to grow and evolve, we remain committed to investing in technologies that enhance our capabilities and support our customers’ success. The Mycronic MYPro I51 AOI system is a key part of that journey.
